Kinsmen Park South

Kinsmen Park South Renewal Project. Banner shows a photo of the Kinsmen Park South info post and a snow-covered parkspace.

Kinsmen Park South is set to undergo renewal work in 2025, pending budget approval. The City’s goal is to transform the park into an all-season destination for residents. Once complete, this renovation will meet the principles of the Recreation Master Plan, the Winter City Strategy, the Adapted Recreation Plan and will align with the new Accessible Playground Standards.

The proposed upgrades include a renewed and accessible playground and spray pad, a four-season, all-gender public washroom, seating area and landscaping, and a potential toboggan hill and pleasure skate. The City is also working closely with the Regina Ski Club to upgrade the existing cross-country ski trails by installing landforms and additional plant material to help capture snow for the trails and help naturalize the space.

  • Hello, wondering if it would be possible to put in a few disc golf baskets into the park?? there aren't very many places to play in Regina, and in know a lot of people in the community who play! Also I love the idea of adding the berms, toboggan hill and washroom.

    Chelsea asked 18 days ago

Thank you for the question. The proposed upgrades for Kinsmen Park South do not include plans for disc golf baskets. The City currently has 2 permanent disc golf locations, one at Douglas Park and one at Mamowimiweyitamowin Park (the former Regent Par 3). We also have a seasonal 'pop-up' course in Les Sherman Park that is put up by the community. We are currently working with the Regina Disc Golf Association on a potential third location.

  • Can we please designate some areas for native plants and trees?

    Amber asked 25 days ago

    Thank you for the question.

While the plant materials have not been finalized, the intention is to use native trees, shrubs and perennials where feasible.

  • In the past washrooms and warm up areas have become problematic as it became an attraction for drug use and other undesirable behavior. What is the cities plan to prevent a similar outcome at this location.

Lyle M asked 25 days ago

    Thank you for the question.

The washroom building will be relocated in a high-traffic area near the playground and spray pad and will be lit in an effort to prevent any undesirable behaviour.

  • Will the walking paths still be available in the non- winter seasons. These paths are used alot by many in the community for walking, running, biking. Also I don't think a tobbogan hill in the parkw will add any value. Part of the beaty of the park is being able to see view all the way across from one side to the other.

    Maria asked 26 days ago

    Thank you for the question.

Yes, the walking paths will still be available in the non-winter seasons.

  • With the proposed ski trail no longer running parallel to and also decently set back from Kings street, where do you envision skiers park when wanting to access the trails? I don’t see a natural “starting point” in the map as of now, especially for large racing and training groups.

    Kinsmen_Skier asked 26 days ago

Thank you for the question. The existing ski trail route will remain unchanged, with additional sections being added. As a result, current parking options will not be affected.

  • Sounds like very needed upgrades, thank you! Any idea what the plans are for the old st pius school site on garnet st? I’ve asked a few times with no answer from the city.

    Lindsay asked 27 days ago

Thank you for the question. At this time there are no plans for the St. Pius School site.

  • Any plan for a small fenced off leash dog area? Also, Any plan to pave the road way ,to make walking easier and safer.

    Chris asked 27 days ago

    Thank you for the question.

The proposed upgrades for Kinsmen Park South do not include plans for an off-leash dog park. Dog owners are asked to continue leashing their dogs and picking up after them. While there are no plans to pave the roadway, the City will enhance the walking paths leading to the main recreation hub, improving access to the proposed playground and spray pad.

  • How many trees will be removed? New planted trees tend to die off due to hot summers and lack of watering, established trees are a huge feature of this park and provide shade at the existing playground and splash pad. If you attend in summer you will see families exclusively in the shade of these trees. It will take decades to grow acceptable new shade trees, if they grow at all. Also another draw of this park is the large splash pad with excellent water flow and puddling water. Most modern splash pads are not as good, according to the kids in my life. Can we have a "good" splash pad, not something small and boring like the ones at Rick Hansen, the new Regent park, the south leisure centre? (This question comes from my child, who uses this park daily all summer). A new washroom is great! What security features will exist to maintain safety for neighbourhood users? Private accessible washrooms are often used for shelter for unhoused people, we have more than a few times had issues at Regent park and wascana park with unsafe situations, drug use like needles left behind, etc. Kinsmen Park is a serene place, even in the busy summer months. I hope the city will aim to preserve the serenity and neighbourhood feel of the park and not tear it all out in the name of progress.

    Rp2021 asked 27 days ago

The City of Regina strives to preserve mature trees whenever possible. However, to make Kinsmen Park more accessible, 3-4 trees must be removed to create accessible parking and an accessible entrance. If funding is approved, the City plans to plant approximately 90 trees, ensuring a mature tree canopy for future generations.

The new splash pad will feature a modern design, including a small stream or drainage channel for children to play in. To improve safety and visibility, the washroom has been relocated to a more populated area of the park, and lighting will be added to the building. Individual stalls also enhance safety, as they allow clear visibility into the space.

  • How does ‘installing land forms and additional plant material to capture snow for the trails help ‘naturalize the space’. The Space Is Natural! an open, grassy area that every park should have, that serves all kinds of activities- free form game play,

Sherill Wenaus asked 27 days ago

    Thank you for the question.

The berms will be removed from the plans following the Ski Club’s decision to reverse their original request. The berms were initially proposed to add terrain changes, providing additional challenge and variety to the ski trails.

  • is there a chance of a possible disc golf course going up in this park as well
