Bird Friendly City Regina

Regina is a Bird Friendly City

Birds play a vital role in keeping our ecosystems healthy by controlling pests, pollinating plants, dispersing seeds, and more. They serve as indicators of environmental health, reflecting changes in ecosystems that affect all life. Their beauty, songs, and presence enrich our lives and connect us to the natural world. But birds are facing serious challenges. There are three billion fewer birds in North America today than 50 years ago. Many of these losses are caused by human activities – from predation by free-roaming cats, to window and car collisions. This highlights the critical need for conservation efforts to protect our birds. Together, with science-backed action, we can reverse this trend.

When birds and their habitats are healthy and cared for, everyone benefits. The Bird Friendly City designation encourages communities to take action to reduce the number of human-related threats to birds, create safe environments for birds by promoting stewardship and ensuring that natural habitats are protected and restored, and engage and educate citizens about the benefits of Bird Friendly Cities and celebrating birds in our communities. We are grateful to the City of Regina for the many bird-friendly policies and actions already in place and we look forward to continuing to work together to help birds thrive in Regina.

  • Becoming a Bird Friendly City

In March 2022, the City of Regina became the 5th municipality in Canada to earn Nature Canada’s Bird Friendly City designation. This designation was the result of an application recognizing all the positive actions to save birds that are happening in the city. The certification is a badge of honour that celebrates the contributions municipalities make to save bird lives.
