What We Learned: Centre Square Planning Study

The analysis of the Centre Square Planning Study public engagement is complete and we are ready to share what we learned through the online survey, pop-up events, stakeholder interviews and focus group discussions.

Feedback collected shows that Centre Square is valued for its central location, walkability and historic character. People also feel that the area has potential for reinvestment and there was support for long-term growth and revitalization.

Some of the key themes:

  • Strong support for more housing and population growth to be accommodated through residential and mixed-use infill development.

  • Many respondents identified safety (real and perceived) as the most pressing concern

  • Strong support for local businesses and potential for economic investment, however, safety and lower foot traffic in the winter are considered current barriers

  • Improving public spaces and walkability were major priorities including improved street and sidewalk maintenance and better crossings on Albert Street and Broad Street to connect Centre Square to other neighbourhoods

The feedback also highlighted challenges with current housing and economic market conditions along with opportunities to address barriers to reinvestment. Results from this public engagement will help to inform next steps as we develop a long-term planning strategy that reflects the priorities of people who live, work and visit Centre Square.
